With the significant trend for consuming Cloud software, which IDC believes is growing at a pace of 3 times that of traditional software delivery (IDC Market Analysis Perspective: Worldwide SaaS and Cloud Software, 2016), we really need a solid Data Protection solution for SaaS apps right?
Data Protection in public cloud for IaaS appears to be evolving at a steady pace, but with so many SaaS apps being consumed, I expect people are simply adopting the default protection options providers make available (if any at all), as there doesn’t appear to be a solid alternative.
From an IaaS perspective, it’s encouraging to see options from public cloud providers that enable recovery from on premise (VMware/Hyper-V) into any Public Cloud, being able to select backup retention, having storage gateways available and having a wider selection of OS and DB protection. It’s also encouraging to see that Commvault has further enhanced its protection options in the Public IaaS space. You can now perform Cloud Snapshots and indexing, through the deployment of Commvault Virtual Server Agents, thus reducing the need for traditional agents.
Regarding SaaS App protection, it appears that Commvault are starting to focus on the protection of SaaS applications. Based on the recent release notes, it appears they now support Salesforce (Commvault Support for Salesforce) and also Gmail/Google Drive (Commvault Support for Cloud Apps). It would be interesting to know if a similar approach is being developed for OneDrive for Business, as this is a very commonly used SaaS application starting to gain traction in the enterprise. So are they and other data protection software companies moving fast enough? Feels like there is a fairly big chasm.
It’s worth watching this space, as being able to directly protect SaaS Apps will simplify data protection and give control back to the customer around data retention and recoverability. With the speed at which Cloud software is growing compared to traditional software delivery, I don’t see how SaaS App and data protection software companies really have a choice.
